The creator of Pac-Man explains something I never really understood:

“The four ghosts all occupy different positions on screen. The red ghost is the aggressor, chasing directly after Pac-Man. The pink one is positioned at a point 32 pixels in front, the blue symmetrical to Pac-Man, and the orange entirely random.”

Genius.
