John Scott Tynes: Transubstantiating the aether since 1995
by John Scott Tynes

Ren & Stimpy fans take note: John Kricfalusi is doing a Kickstarter to fund a new George Liquor cartoon. You’ll get it for just $1 but for $30 you’ll get an original John K. sketch, which as you’ll see is the most popular option. It’s the one I went for. We need more crazed genius cartoons in the world.

Badass inventor Ralph Baer demonstrates functional home shopping, schoolwork, and videogames via cable TV in 1973. He plays his Pong videogame about six and a half minutes in and shows something I hadn’t seen before: an “English” control that lets you adjust the course of the ball in flight after you hit it. Pretty great stuff.

Video game inventor demonstrates multimedia box…in 1973

Home video game inventor Ralph Baer demonstrates the "All Purpose Box" in this rare video from nearly forty years ago, showing how even in the 1970s, video game consoles were thought to have potential beyond games.

EA drops the bomb and directly fingers ex-EA COO John Schappert for ripping off The Sims Social; I guess his revolving door at EA has been nailed shut. Their lawsuit document has extensive, convincing, and utterly unsurprising examples of Zynga’s copying of The Sims Social. I love their example of the green yoga mat with a white tree design, one of the many customizing items from Sims Social that is dutifully knocked off in The Ville.

EA sues Zynga

Electronic Arts thinks Zynga went too far copying the design of its popular Sims series for Facebook game The Ville , and has filed a copyright infringement suit against the social game giant.

Stone Skin Press is a new fiction imprint managed by game designer Robin Laws. He’s doing some great high-concept anthologies, from new iconic heroes to action-movie H.P. Lovecraft to a thematic revival of Aesop’s Fables. They’re using Kickstarter to launch the line and you can get these great anthologies as ebooks.

The roster of authors is a who’s-who of RPG designers including Ken Hite, Rich Dansky, Dennis Detwiller, Rob Heinsoo, James Wallis, and many more. Including me — I’ve got a story in their book The New Hero vol. 2 that I can’t wait for people to read.

So please check out their Kickstarter and see what they’ve got. I think this is a really strong new fiction line from a talented editor.

My friend and collaborator Greg Stolze has a new tabletop RPG locked and loaded: Better Angels, in which supervillains are secretly possessed by demons and have to engage in cartoonish villainy to prevent their demon from engaging in REAL villainy. It’s a great, crazy premise and with this Kickstarter his publisher Arc Dream can get the game produced as a full-color ebook. Got $15? Then check out this new game by a brilliant designer.

Better Angels — A Hell of a Roleplaying Game by Greg Stolze

A demon gave you superpowers and it demands EVIL. Maybe a little over-the-top, thwartable villainy will keep it under control. Maybe.
