John Scott Tynes: Transubstantiating the aether since 1995
by John Scott Tynes

My two favorite moments from our E3 keynote: describing Ultimate Fighting Championship as a “thought leader” and Ice T announcing he’s reforming Body Count to record a new song inspired by Gears of War’s Horde Mode. Comedy gold!

Want to see what the Xbox dashboard will look like this fall? Controller, remote, voice, gesture, we’ll do it all, plus Bing voice search to find all related games and media for whatever you want. It’s pretty sweet.

Does the New Xbox 360 Dashboard Look Familiar to You?

This fall the Xbox 360 gets a sexy new dashboard update, giving the service a look and feel that should be incredibly familiar to both Windows Phone 7 owners and folks that have gotten a peek at Windows 8.

Today I presented my four-page crazy-pants blue-sky system design that could form the core gameplay of a new product. The dev lead responded, “Fundamentally, this is buildable.” Experience FTW.

Still can’t really talk about this one yet but the teaser site is live. This is an Xbox LIVE Arcade game I incubated here at Microsoft with Mitch and Ray. We handed it off to Certain Affinity in Austin, Texas, to actually build it. I haven’t been involved with this game for quite a while now but I’ve loved seeing it come together.

This morning I ran into the general manager at Microsoft Game Studios who originally greenlit my game Full House Poker. He stopped me to say that his wife has earned 60 million XP (in a game where level cap is at 1 million) and they installed an Xbox in their kitchen just so she can play more often. Thank God we aren’t using real money or this guy would be on the street.

An important lesson for us all: If you can’t come up with a non-obscene nickname for yourself after thirty-four attempts, maybe it’s time to find a new hobby.
